Overview

A metropolitan council in Queensland contacted Brandeditems to support their local government with promotional merchandise for their community.

The council delivers a wide range of community services, including libraries, recreation programs, waste education initiatives, and family services. However, their community had low awareness of certain programs, particularly among newer residents who were unfamiliar with available council resources.

The council required local government promotional merchandise that could be distributed across multiple departments and community touchpoints. Members of the council did not have specific products in mind, and we worked with them to select items that would appeal to diverse age groups while keeping them visible.

Our Objective

  • To increase community engagement and awareness of available services, especially among families and new residents.
  • Promote the local council’s services and programs
  • Encourage participation in local events and community initiatives
  • Create a positive, approachable council brand presence
  • Provide useful items that households would retain and use regularly
  • Align all promotional products with the council’s sustainability and community values

Our Approach

Brandeditems recommended a Community Welcome and Engagement Pack as part of the council’s branded merchandise. These packs would introduce residents to key services while providing useful, everyday household items.

During the selection process, our key considerations were to:

1

01

Create practical, family-friendly products that would be used daily by households

2

02

Appeal to a broad demographic, including families and older residents

3

03

Prioritise sustainable product options that align with the council’s messaging

4

04

Focus on professional, community-focused, and highly visible branding

Although we did consider event-only giveaways, printed brochures, and higher-value premium gifts distributed in limited quantities, we opted for the pack instead. It was chosen because the packs allowed councils to communicate multiple messages and provide long-lasting brand exposure.

The final Community Engagement Pack included:

1

01

Reusable, eco-friendly shopping bags supporting sustainability messaging

2

02

Branded fridge magnets featuring key council contact details

3

03

Reusable drink bottles suitable for parks and community activities

4

04

Children's activity booklets promoting recycling and local services

5

05

Branded pens for general household use

6

06

Printed welcome guide outlining key council services

Branding and presentation were important considerations during the selection process. All products were done in council-approved colours and packaged in a reusable bag. This reusable bag itself served as both packaging and a functional long-term promotional item.

The Results

The packs were distributed to new residents, community event attendees, and families attending council-run programs. Together with Brandeditems, the local government achieved the following results:

  • Increased awareness of council services across targeted communities
  • Strong engagement at local events where packs were distributed
  • Improved accessibility to council contact information through practical items, such as fridge magnets
  • Positive reception and increased inquiries from residents who valued the usefulness of the products

The council staff reported that the packs made it easier to introduce services and start conversations with residents during community outreach events. Due to the program’s success, the council expanded these packs to their library promotions, waste education programs, and community wellbeing initiatives.
